The Richmond Department of Fire and Emergency Services - is 421 members operating out of 20 stations. Richmond deploys the Quint Concept, operating 20 quint companies (4 minimum staffing) and 3 heavy rescue companies (5 minimum staffing), 3 tankers, 2 brush trucks, 1 water rescue truck, one hazmat response vehicle, one Technical Rescue truck, and numerous staff vehicles.
The department is divided into four divisions: Administration, Operations, Support Services, and ESU. A deputy chief is assigned to Operations and oversees 3 battalions. Support Services includes prevention, training, and ESU, and is also supervised by a Division Chief.
The Richmond Fire Department is tasked with protecting approx. 200,000 residences and over 400,000 workers and visitors each day. The department responds to over 30,000 calls for service each year and has an operating budget of $38.5 million.
The Richmond Department of Fire and Emergency Services was the first fire department in the United States to operate under the Total Quint Concept.
The Total Quint Concept plan enables Richmond Fire & Emergency Services to have a substantial reduction in personnel, yet keep all 20 fire stations operating, with resources and apparatus that personnel can utilize more effectively and efficiently.
